First stop: Franz Josef Glacier. We had a 15 minute walk to get to the viewing area. It was nice to actually walk along this bush and see how dense it is. This tree fern is a good example of the beautiful plants we got to see.
Unfortunately it's too far to walk to get much closer but it was really beautiful. And again please note the amazing weather God blessed us with for this day.
Then we drove down to Fox Glacier. We parked next to the HUGE cliff. It was incredible to see such a huge rock, so steep and so high.

Breathtaking. Once again the size of it is just so incredible. A photo just does not do it justice.
Although it's only a 10 minute walk to this Glacier, they had been having rock falls on the path over the last week and so had closed the path. The machine behind them was busy making another path down into the river bed (away from the rocks falling down the mountain on the left). But it was still very special to get this close. Apparently it takes 6 years for the snow that falls way up on the mountain to get to the front of the glacier. The glacier is moving forward at around 40cm a DAY (that's almost 1/2 a meter every day).
Then we continued down the Coast enjoying the wonderful scenery and finally heading inland at Haast.
Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea where the first two inland lakes we got to see on this trip and they were beautiful.
Stopping for a pit-stop. Grandpa: "How can you even describe this to someone". The photos just give you the tiniest glimpse. It was lovely.
The girls and I stayed at the camp site while the others headed to the shops for a few things. Ruth loved climbing over and we all enjoyed the swings. This camp site had a lovely big baby bath, so as soon as they were back I could take the little ones over for a nice bath. We had a BBQ for dinner (another very late night for the girls).
Our second day of 360km of travel down the West Coast and then inland to Wanaka. The lakes are unfortunately looking black on this map. We first drove past the top of Lake Wanaka and when the road turned and we saw Lake Hawea we all just said "WOW". The two lakes were such different colours but were both so beautiful.
