Lots of Sorting

Another enjoyable 2 hours spend outside by the girls before lunch. I just love the games they come up with and how much fun they have playing together. There is a nice big tree just down from our garden with a sort-of tree house which has been quite lately as well as heading down to the pile of dead trees waiting to be burnt (just further behind them in the picture) and climbing all over those. It's so nice that I don't have to worry about snakes out there.
With them happily entertained I decided to get stuck into sorting my bulk food supplies. I have these packets in at least 3 different places and finally enough was enough and I wanted to do some sorting. First I had to get all the packets from all the different cupboards together. And these weren't even all of them (and does not include the more "bulk" items which are stored elsewhere).
I used to have preserve bottles (not fancy ones - just old mayo or jam bottles) in half this cupboard but as the bottles are mostly empty now I decided they could just be stored upstairs and these cupboards can finally be used more effectively. So it was bottles out (only around 4 or 5 left with things in them - bottom right), cupboard cleaned and then sorting and packing. There were a couple of items I had 2 open bags for (how frustrating) and others which I realized I was running out of. So it was great to get it all organized. The only down side was how high this cupboard was and so I did a lot of climbing up and down my kitchen steps to get everything packed. By lunch time I was EXHAUSTED. I was even too tired to make myself lunch. I ended up having a chocolate bar for lunch (how naughty is that) but then felt quite a bit better so I made myself some proper lunch and got some more sorting done in the afternoon. I started on the pantry cupboard! I cleaned, covered and sorted one shelf and so well predicted Rachel's response - "cool". I first gave the shelf a good scrub down but as they are quite marked I decided to cover them with some wall paper samples I got years ago. Even though Rachel helped me with the wall paper she was just so thrilled with the result. And I was thrilled to finally get started on sorting these kitchen cupboards.

Box and bake

The girls had so much fun with this box today. They started by taking turns being INSIDE.
And then I showed them that if the box was down they could both fit in (although not close the box). These two are so close and love each other so very much.
Amazing how much more fun toys are when you are sitting in a box with them...
A pretty little visitor.
My latest bulk purchase. I have always bought the 1kg syrup tins and then topped up my bottles from there. But now I have bought a 4kg bucket. So there is another item that will only need to be purchased once a year....
Rachel's two friends Hayley and Grace (sisters) are being enrolled at Brownies today. So they have a bit of a party and so Rachel and I made some cookies for her to take with.
I then tried the recipe with gluten free flour and Ruth helped with flattening the balls.
It didn't take Hannah long to join in.
And they were such a success. Not every recipe will work with gluten free flour - so thanks Jacqui for your "Chocolate crisps" recipe.

Another day off

Unfortunately Brendon was still feeling really bad this morning and spent the morning in bed again. I had to adjust my thinking for the weekend as we had a possible plan to go to Orana Park tomorrow (because the girls were sick on Ruth's birthday) and that would have meant getting a bit of shopping done.
Thankfully I do have much that I have bought in bulk (my last purchase - 25kg of Jasmine Rice). But I was in need of fresh fruit and veg. So realizing the family would not be well enough for us to go out, I just got what I needed from the local store. It is more expensive than in town, but town is so far that unless you have other things to do, it's not worth the trip.
The girls are still coughing a little bit but I was really thankful that for the first time in a while I did not have to get up for either of them in the night. Yes, poor Brendon was up at 3 having a good nose blow and getting himself some meds, but at least I did not have to get out of bed.

Buying in bulk

So I have added a couple of extra items to my really big bulk order. The latest is our raw sugar - 25kg. I also buy oats 25kg, flour 20kg, rice 25kg, chutney type tomato sauce 5 ltr bottles and ricies (or rice krispies) 6kg. And then there are the smaller packs - just 3kg but it's quite a bit when it's 3kg of things like sunflower seeds, linseeds, sesame seeds, popcorn, cocoa powder (and quite a few more).
So if you are getting the idea that I don't like shopping - you are RIGHT. It's so nice to have a stock that I don't have to worry about buying items for months on end.
